The psychological impact of breast cancer treatment is enormous and poor results after breast cancer surgery becomes a daily lifelong reminder for the patients about their cancer. Oncoplastic breast surgery results in excellent cosmetic outcomes after removal of the breast cancer which improves the confidence and outlook after breast cancer treatment.
Who performs it?
Oncoplastic breast surgery is performed by oncoplastic breast surgeons who are trained in both general breast surgery and plastic surgical techniques. United Kingdom has pioneered this training programmes with specialised national oncoplastic fellowships and Masters programmes.
How is it done?
Traditional breast cancer surgery involves making a cut over the cancer- this can leave an unsightly scar and permanent dents. Oncoplastic Breast surgery uses scars hidden around the nipple and under the breast to improve the appearance. In cosmetic breast reduction excess breast tissue is removed to reduce and reshape the breast. The same principles are used but the cancer bearing tissue is removed during oncoplastic procedures.
